Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Tokyo 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8656, Japan Received 31 December 2005; in final form 20 February 2006 Abstract A method for detachment of vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotube (VA-SWNT) films from substrates simply using hot water has been developed. The VA-SWNT films were peeled off spontaneously by submersing the substrate into heated (larger than 60 °C) distilled water, and the detached films floated on the water surface. The detached films could readily be re-attached onto arbitrary solid surfaces, and conservation of the vertically aligned morphology after the re-attachment was confirmed based on measurements by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, resonant Raman scattering, and optical absorption spectroscopy. A possible mechanism for the process of film detachment is discussed.

متن کاملFormation of highly dense aligned ribbons and transparent films of single-walled carbon nanotubes directly from carpets.
Utilizing aligned carbon nanotube arrays grown from chemical vapor deposition, we present a highly scalable route toward the formation of ribbons and ultrathin transparent films directly from vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotube arrays (SWNT carpets). To "lay-over" the aligned nanotubes to form a film, we use a roller which acts to compress the film and preserve the alignment of nan...
متن کاملHigh-Yield Assembly of Individual Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Tips for Scanning Probe Microscopies
The structural and mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) make them ideal tips for scanning probe microscopies such as atomic force microscopy (AFM). However, the ideal nanotube probe, which corresponds to an individual SWNT, has been difficult to produce in high yield. To overcome this difficulty, a straightforward and easily implemented method that enables very high-y...
متن کاملOptimized Conditions for Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes
Here, we have synthesized vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs), using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Cobalt and ethanol are used as the catalyst and the carbon source, respectively. The effects of ethanol flow rate, thickness of Co catalyst film, and growth time on the properties of the carbon nanotube growth are investigated. The results show that the flow rate of ethanol and...

A series of SWNT arrays have been constructed by disproportionation of carbon monoxide on Co-Mo catalyst films deposited on flat Si wafer substrates. The arrays include a two-dimensional SWNT thin film prepared by spraying a SWNT suspension, as well as random SWNT networks, and vertically aligned SWNT. In addition, a novel SWNT array has been developed and termed SWNT "pillars". These pillars a...
